Two-Day Crew Marlin Fishing Report This Week 🎣
Well… after what’s been the windiest year so far for us in our many years of operating out of Hamo, the forecast for last Monday and Tuesday was bloody amazing! Thank you weather gods! Finally, good weather for a few days. 🙌🏻 This gave us the best weather window we’ve seen in many months, and with slow bookings, there was only one thing to do… take “Moonshine” out to raise some blacks and sails to hopefully rack up a few extra club points for me before the end of June. 🎣🔥
My 10kg outfits came out to play, and by Monday lunchtime, Captain Russ had put me on a cracking black marlin. I’d definitely met my match with one stubborn fish. She piled onto a JB Micro Dingo lure and never jumped at all during the entire 3-hour fight. It was pure tug-of-war back and forth and for the first hour and a half without using the harness gave my arms a good stretching! (Oh, they hurt so good yesterday haha) Capt Russ thoroughly enjoyed giving Moonshine’s turbos a proper workout reversing and the old girl didn’t skip a beat.
This fish was never really that far from the boat during the whole fight, and I just had to wait for my opportunity for her to come up so we could finally get a good look at her. Eventually, right on the 3-hour mark, she came up the last 20 meters and we set eyes on her. Ohhhhhh shes nice! Mikey got a hand on the leader… and then the hook popped out. Noooooo 💔 No tag! Oh, there were some other rather loud cussing choice words yelled from the captain, as you could imagine! 😬🤣 This fish is my new PB black for our Whitsundays region.
Tuesday with the glass-out conditions was a cracker of a day to be on the water, tagging 1 sail and dropping another, unfortunately.
Pretty sure my first sail and black in the month of May. Usually, it`s just too windy to get out wide, but I’m stoked that we had the opportunity to, though. We have a great fishery here in the Whitsundays and we would love to see more locals targeting the billfish here. I have my eye on the ladies` 10 kg sailfish record, and we keep chipping away at targeting that record for me for the rest of the year.
