Capt Russell & Marlene Hicks

The backbone of the Topnotch Game Fishing business is the dynamic husband and wife duo Captain Russell and Marlene Hicks. The Hicks have extensively fished the Whitsunday region for ten years and offer various fishing styles. They understand the Whitsunday waters like the back of their hands.

They are meticulous in the presentation of their boats which are maintained to a high standard. The food and beverage are five stars, and their sashimi/ceviche/poke meals are legendary.

Russell and Marlene are go-getters who work hard to ensure their guests experience the best fishing in the Whitsundays. In a relaxed atmosphere where attention is to detail yet, professional island-style hosting is exemplary. Of course, they are incredibly passionate about fishing and revel in showing off exactly what their region offers.

Fred Tarry is one of the most remarkable people we know & an outstanding fisherman! Fred is a young 66 years old & is legally blind! Nothing stops this incredible man from enjoying his fishing & we love having Fred & Jason onboard with the Topnotch team.

Fred caught this big sail at the end of an epic 4-day live-aboard fishing charter on Brilliant Company at the Whitsundays Great Barrier Reef. Cool, calm & collected Fred reeled in this cracker of a sail in no time for a healthy release. Huge congratulations mate!!! Can't wait for next years fishing trip.

It’s A Pirate’s Life At Sea

The Pirate is a custom build 34 ft sports fisher built locally in Cairns in 2003. Made by an experienced marlin captain Brad Craft, who teamed up with master boatbuilder Dick Ward in 1999. Between them, they produced four sports fishing boats under the PIRATE brand. Two 31 footers and two 34 footers. The Pirate and Saltaire (34 ft game boats) are well-known in the Cairns sports fishing industry as excellent fish raisers.

This model has proven its sea-keeping ability in rough seas and agile, precise manoeuvrability to chase down a billfish quickly. With her good looks to match, the 34 footer certainly grabs the attention of many keen light tackle anglers. The boat is powered by twin Cummins B Series 280hp turbocharged six-cylinder diesel and fitted with Twin Disc gearboxes to control the transmission. With a comfortable cruising speed of 20 knots, we will have you at the fishing grounds in no time at all.

Onboard Features
Onboard there are high-quality GARMIN electronics fitted to ensure safe navigating at all times and of course, to find those fish off course. The vessel offers comfort and convenience; there is a toilet/shower, bar fridge in the galley. The open style shaded saloon has two spacious L-shaped lounge seats on both sides of the boat, making it ideal for watching all the fishing action.
